Fr Edwin Gariguez is the Executive Secretary of NASSA (Caritas Philippines), CAFOD’s key partner for all its response to the devastation on 8 November 2013 of Typhoon Haiyan.
Father Edwin asked Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines in January 2015 to address the issue of climate change which he says urgently needs the Church’s attention. In his letter, Father Edwin asked the Pope to call on governments to commit to climate change reduction measures and to support calls to end the continued burning of fossil fuels. He wrote:
“Facing hunger, increased mortality due to temperature increase and more destruction from extreme weather events, the Philippines is at the doorstep of all major threats of climate change… Investing in fossil fuel companies and in eco-destructive projects is synonymous with supporting the destruction of our future.”
Fr Edu is also a leading environmentalist who won the Environmental Goldman Prize in 2012 for protesting against mining in Mindoro: http://www.goldmanprize.org/recipient/edwin-gariguez/.
